Study notes
A liver biopsy shows hexagonal lobules with a central vein and portal triads at corners. This is the classic liver lobule: cords of hepatocytes radiate from the central vein, and each corner holds a portal triad — a bile duct, hepatic artery branch, and portal vein branch together in connective tissue. Blood flows inward from triad to central vein while bile flows outward to the duct — opposite directions. Recognizing this pattern confirms the sample is liver and reveals fibrosis or cirrhosis when distorted.
