Study notes
Example: Classifying a Galaxy Question: You observe a galaxy through a telescope. It appears as a perfect ellipse, similar to a rugby ball, and contains mostly yellow and red points of light with no blue stars or clouds. What type of galaxy is this? Steps: 1. Analyze the Shape: The galaxy is oval or egg-shaped, not flat with arms. This rules out Spiral Galaxies. 2. Analyze the Color: The light is predominantly yellow and red. Red and yellow stars are older, cooler stars. Blue stars are young and hot. 3. Analyze Composition: There are no visible clouds of gas or dust. This means there is no material available to form new stars. 4. Conclusion: A galaxy that is elliptical in shape, contains old stars, and lacks gas for star formation is classified as an Elliptical Galaxy.
