Radiation from accelerated charges (introductory)
Maxwell's equations · Physics
Study notes
Step 1: Identify the scenario. An electron is moving in a circular path due to a magnetic field. Since the direction of velocity changes constantly, the electron is accelerating (centripetal acceleration). Step 2: Apply the condition for radiation. Because the charge is accelerating, it emits electromagnetic radiation. Step 3: Determine the type. The frequency of this radiation is related to the electron's orbital frequency. This is known as cyclotron radiation. Step 4: Conclusion. The moving electron loses a tiny amount of energy as radiation, causing its orbit to spiral inward slightly, though usually negligible in basic magnetic traps.
