Thermal expansion of liquids and gases

Temperature and thermal expansion · Physics

Study notes

Step 1: Identify the original volume of water: V₀ = 1 L. Step 2: Find the temperature change: ΔT = 100°C - 20°C = 80°C. Step 3: Use the coefficient of thermal expansion for water (β ≈ 210 × 10⁻⁶ /°C). Step 4: Calculate the volume change: ΔV = β × V₀ × ΔT = 210 × 10⁻⁶ × 1 L × 80 = 0.0168 L. Step 5: Convert to milliliters: 0.0168 L = 16.8 mL. Step 6: Add the change to the original volume: Final volume = V₀ + ΔV = 1 L + 0.0168 L = 1.0168 L. So the water expands by about 16.8 mL.
