Common surgical conditions: hernias, thyroid swellings, breast lumps
General Medicine and General Surgery (for BDS) · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
A midline neck swelling moves upward on swallowing. What does this sign indicate? Thyroid origin - the gland's attachment to the larynx pulls it up; a thyroglossal cyst moves with tongue protrusion too. Students learn the movement test: swellings declare their attachments by moving - thyroid with swallowing, thyroglossal with tongue - because anatomy, not the lump's size, names it.
