Study notes

A 0.5-m³ block of wood (density 600 kg/m³) floats in water (1000 kg/m³). What volume stays submerged? Step 1: Weight of block = ρ_wood × V × g = 600 × 0.5 × g = 300g. Step 2: Floating means buoyant force = weight: ρ_water × V_sub × g = 300g. Step 3: V_sub = 300 / 1000 = 0.3 m³. Step 4: Fraction submerged = 0.3/0.5 = 0.6 = 60%. Answer: 0.3 m³ (60%) stays underwater; 40% floats above. The fraction submerged always equals ρ_object/ρ_fluid.
