Study notes
An iceberg of volume 1000 m³ floats in seawater (density 1025 kg/m³). Ice density is 917 kg/m³. What volume is above water? Step 1: Fraction submerged = ρ_ice/ρ_sea = 917/1025 ≈ 0.8946. Step 2: Submerged volume = 0.8946 × 1000 = 894.6 m³. Step 3: Volume above water = 1000 − 894.6 = 105.4 m³. Answer: Only ~105 m³ (about 10.5%) shows above the surface — the visible "tip of the iceberg" hides nearly 90% below.
