Study notes
A metal block weighs 8 N in air and 7 N when fully immersed in water. Find (a) its relative density and (b) its density. Step 1: Loss of weight in water = buoyant force = 8 − 7 = 1 N = weight of displaced water. Step 2: (a) RD = weight in air / loss of weight = 8 / 1 = 8. Step 3: (b) Density = RD × 1000 = 8000 kg/m³. Answer: (a) RD = 8, (b) 8000 kg/m³ — close to iron/steel, so the block is likely steel. This is exactly how Archimedes exposed the impure crown.
