Study notes

Show that Cl₂ + 2OH⁻ → Cl⁻ + ClO⁻ + H₂O is disproportionation. Step 1: Cl₂: ON of Cl = 0. Step 2: Products: Cl⁻ has −1 (reduced); ClO⁻ has +1 (oxidised). Step 3: Same element (Cl) both oxidised and reduced ✓. Step 4: In hot concentrated OH⁻: 3Cl₂ + 6OH⁻ → 5Cl⁻ + ClO₃⁻ + 3H₂O (Cl: 0 → −1, +5). Temperature/concentration decide which oxyanion forms.
