Preliminary tests: flame test, borax bead test

Qualitative Inorganic Analysis · Chemistry

Study notes

A salt gives a golden-yellow flame and a blue borax bead. Identify possible metals. Step 1: Golden yellow → Na⁺ (very characteristic, masks others). Step 2: Blue bead (oxidising flame) → Co²⁺ (cobalt metaborate). Step 3: Could be a mixture: NaCl + cobalt salt. Step 4: Confirm: Na by flame (persistent), Co by bead + confirmatory tests. Two tests, two metals!
