Retrosynthesize: PhCH₂CH₂OH from simpler pieces. Step 1: Target: PhCH₂CH₂OH. Disconnect C–C next to OH-bearing carbon. Step 2: Synthons: PhCH₂⁻ + ⁺CH₂OH (or PhCH₂⁺ + ⁻CH₂OH).
