Study notes

Zinc blende (ZnS) can't be reduced by carbon directly. Show the route. Step 1: Roast: 2ZnS + 3O₂ → 2ZnO + 2SO₂ (sulphide → oxide). Step 2: Smelt: ZnO + C → Zn + CO (oxide reduced by coke). Step 3: Zn vapour distilled (bp 907°C) and condensed. Step 4: Two-step dance: convert to oxide first, then reduce — metallurgy's standard trick!
