Development of dentition and occlusion: deciduous to permanent
Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
Why is the mixed-dentition stage (6–12 years) called orthodontics' opportunity window? Both dentitions are present and the jaws are still growing — problems like crowding, crossbites and habits can be intercepted while growth and leeway space (the extra room when wider deciduous molars are replaced by narrower premolars) are available. After growth ends and all permanent teeth erupt, only tooth movement remains possible. Students learn: intercept in mixed dentition, correct in permanent.
