Gingival diseases: plaque-induced, non-plaque-induced

Periodontology · Dental (BDS)

Study notes

Gums are swollen but the patient has excellent hygiene and no plaque. What should the student consider? Non-plaque-induced gingival disease - perhaps a systemic condition, medication effect, genetic fibromatosis, or an allergic reaction. The lesson: when the clinical picture doesn't match the plaque, look beyond plaque - the classification exists precisely so unusual cases aren't mistreated as simple gingivitis.
