Pulp biology: diagnosis of pulp and periapical diseases
Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
Cold water causes sharp pain that vanishes in seconds. Reversible or irreversible pulpitis? Reversible — the pain is brief and stimulus-bound, meaning the pulp is inflamed but vital and capable of recovery once the irritant (e.g., decay) is removed. Lingering pain (lasting minutes after the cold is gone) or spontaneous night pain signals irreversible pulpitis, where the pulp cannot heal. Students drill this distinction because it decides: filling vs root canal.
