Eyelid disorders: stye, chalazion, blepharitis, ptosis

Ophthalmology · MBBS

Study notes

A painful red eyelid bump — stye; warm compresses, not squeezing. Hordeolum/stye (infected lash gland — painful, localized): warm compress + topical antibiotic; never squeeze (spreads infection). Chalazion (blocked meibomian — painless firm nodule: warm compress; intralesional steroid or incision-curettage if persistent). Blepharitis (lid margin — crusting, burning: lifelong lid hygiene — warm compress + scrubs). Ptosis (drooping: congenital — operate early or amblyopia; myasthenia — fatigable, ice test; Horner's — + miosis; CN III — + dilated pupil). The painful bump is infection — the painless one is blockage.
