Pediatrics · MBBS
Study notes
A 2-year-old — weight-for-height below -3 SD; SAM; therapeutic feeding started. SAM (severe acute malnutrition — WHZ <−3 or MUAC <11.5cm or edema: treat — stabilize — F-75, then catch-up — F-100/RUTF — ready-to-use therapeutic food; treat infections — antibiotics; complications — hypoglycemia, hypothermia): MAM (WHZ −2 to −3 — supplementary feeding). Breastfeeding (initiate within 1 hour — colostrum; exclusive 6 months — no water; continue to 2 years): complementary feeding (start 6 months — timely, adequate, safe — mashed family foods; continue breastfeeding). Growth monitoring (plot — weight faltering — earliest sign; act — counsel, treat). The growth curve is the report card — flattening means act now.
