Respiratory: pneumonia, bronchiolitis, asthma in children
Pediatrics · MBBS
Study notes
A 2-year-old — fast breathing, chest indrawing; severe pneumonia; injectable antibiotics, oxygen. Pneumonia (fast breathing — age cutoffs; chest indrawing — severe: IMNCI — pink — severe — refer + first dose; yellow — pneumonia — amoxicillin; treat — amoxicillin 3 days; severe — ampicillin + gentamicin + oxygen): danger signs — unable to drink, convulsions, abnormally sleepy. Bronchiolitis (<2yr — RSV — wheeze, coryza — supportive — oxygen, fluids; no antibiotics/steroids routinely). Asthma (>5 recurrent wheeze — triggers: inhaled corticosteroid — preventer + salbutamol — reliever; action plan). The indrawing chest is severe — oxygen and injectables.
