Absorption of water by roots

Study notes

Let's follow a single drop of water named 'Wally' through the root: 1. Wally starts in the soil. 2. Wally enters a Root Hair through Osmosis because the root hair is saltier. 3. Wally moves through the 'Cortex' (the thick outer layer of the root) mostly using the Apoplast path (the cell walls). 4. Suddenly, Wally hits a wax wall called the 'Casparian Strip' at the Endodermis. 5. Wally is forced to leave the wall and enter the living cell (Symplast path). 6. Wally passes through the Pericycle (the layer just before the pipes). 7. Finally, Wally enters the Xylem vessel, which is the straw that sucks him up to the top of the tree.
