Ascent of sap (transpiration pull theory)

Transport in plants · Biology

Study notes

A 100-metre redwood lifts hundreds of litres of water daily with no pump — transpiration from leaves creates tension that pulls the whole water column up. If you cut a transpiring stem underwater, no air is sucked in, proving the xylem water is under tension, not pressure.
