Synthesize 2-butanol from ethanal using Grignard. Step 1: Need CH₃CH(OH)CH₂CH₃ — from CH₃CHO + CH₃CH₂MgBr. Step 2: Make Grignard: CH₃CH₂Br + Mg → CH₃CH₂MgBr (dry ether). Step 3: Attack: CH₃CHO + CH₃CH₂MgBr → alkoxide → H⁺ workup → 2-butanol. Step 4: Grignard added one ethyl group to the carbonyl carbon — C–C bond made!
