Convert ethanol to ethyl bromide. Choose the reagent. Step 1: ROH + HBr → RBr works, but equilibrium. Step 2: ROH + PBr₃ → RBr + H₃PO₃ — cleaner. Step 3: Best: ROH + SOCl₂ gives RCl (gaseous byproducts escape, driving reaction). Step 4: For bromide: PBr₃ is the standard choice. CH₃CH₂OH + PBr₃ → CH₃CH₂Br!
