Geriatric and pediatric operative considerations
Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
Why are root surfaces the main caries battleground in elderly patients? Gum recession with age exposes root cementum/dentin, which is softer and less mineralized than enamel — decay starts faster and spreads quickly. Add medication-induced dry mouth (less protective saliva) and the risk multiplies. Students learn geriatric operative dentistry as: protect exposed roots (fluoride, GIC), manage dry mouth, and coordinate with physicians on medical complexity.
