Halitosis management, dentinal hypersensitivity
Periodontology · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
A patient complains of bad breath but has healthy gums. Where should the student look first? The tongue dorsum - its papillae trap the bacterial coating producing volatile sulfur compounds, the commonest halitosis source. Management: tongue cleaning, hydration, and only then systemic workup for the minority with non-oral causes. Paired lesson: dentinal hypersensitivity's exposed dentin tubules transmit cold/sweet stimuli to the pulp - desensitizing agents block the tubules. Students learn both as quality-of-life dentistry: socially and functionally distressing, simply diagnosed, simply treated.
