Group 13 (boron family): borax, boric acid, diborane, aluminium compounds
p-Block Elements · Chemistry
Study notes
Boric acid is monobasic despite having 3 H atoms. Explain. Step 1: H₃BO₃ doesn't donate protons like normal acids. Step 2: Instead B(OH)₃ accepts OH⁻ from water: B(OH)₃ + H₂O → [B(OH)₄]⁻ + H⁺. Step 3: Only ONE H⁺ released per molecule → monobasic. Step 4: It's a Lewis acid (electron-pair acceptor), not a proton donor!
