Group 18 (noble gases): xenon fluorides and oxides
p-Block Elements · Chemistry
Study notes
Predict the shape of XeF₄ using VSEPR. Step 1: Xe has 8 valence electrons; 4 bonds to F use 4. Step 2: Remaining 4 electrons = 2 lone pairs. Step 3: 4 bonds + 2 lone pairs = octahedral electron geometry. Step 4: Lone pairs opposite → square planar molecule. Confirmed by experiment!
