Concentrated H₂SO₄ chars sugar black. Explain the dehydrating action. Step 1: Conc. H₂SO₄ has huge affinity for water (hydration enthalpy). Step 2: C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁ → 12C + 11H₂O — it rips H and O out as water. Step 3: Black carbon column rises (classic demo). Step 4: Same property dries gases and causes severe skin burns — respect it!
