Restorative dentistry in children: SSCs, strip crowns
Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry · Dental (BDS)
Study notes
A primary molar has caries on three surfaces. Why crown instead of filling? Multi-surface amalgam/composite in primary molars fails fast under childhood chewing - the SSC (preformed steel crown) covers all surfaces, surviving until exfoliation. Students learn the durability rule: the bigger the primary-tooth defect, the stronger the restoration's indication - SSCs after pulp therapy are standard because the treated tooth must never need retreatment.
