A pH meter reads −0.118 V vs its calibration. If E = 0.40 − 0.0591×pH, find pH. Step 1: −0.118 = 0.40 − 0.0591 × pH. Step 2: 0.0591 × pH = 0.40 + 0.118 = 0.518. Step 3: pH = 0.518/0.0591 = 8.77. Step 4: Each pH unit = 59.1 mV — the Nernstian slope. Real meters hide this maths behind calibration with buffers.
